Heidi's Professional Experience
For nearly 30 years, Heidi Howe has helped make Northern Nevada a safer place to live, work, visit, enjoy, and raise a family.
She started her law enforcement career as an officer with the Reno Police Department, as both a volunteer reserve and career officer.
After that, she began her 26-year rise in the ranks of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office — deputy to sergeant to lieutenant to captain — working along the way in areas ranging from hostage negotiation to the district courts, officer recruitment and training, to multimillion-dollar project management.
Today, Heidi draws on this background as Captain of the Washoe County Jail, where she oversaw more than 350 law enforcement staff and directed the custody of more than 1,300 adult detainees. The jail is the largest bureau within the Sheriff’s Office.
The position requires command presence, the management skills of a business executive, and a commitment to transparency and fairness as a public servant entrusted with public safety, taxpayer money, and the power of the law.
As rapid change occurs in Washoe County, including a projected regional population of 638,000 by 2019 (EPIC Report, 2015), Heidi understands law enforcement must be ready to address the resulting challenges and continually changing laws.
I firmly believe Heidi has both the experience and administrative knowledge to bring to the Washoe County Sheriff Office the necessary leadership the department needs. It is time to elect a highly knowledgeable and capable woman as Sheriff."
